Life in Connemara, A Market Day — Walter Osborne

A street of whitewashed cottages runs down to a stone harbour, and market day has spilled across it. Barefoot women in red petticoats and dark shawls stand talking over baskets, one with a scarlet kerchief on her head; a small child in a blue pinafore waits between two of them. Geese and a pink pig wander the road, a boat lies drawn up by the wall, and across the bay the mountains of Connemara sit blue under a big, broken sky.

Osborne made several trips to Connemara and Galway from 1892, and found there a western version of the rural life he had painted in Brittany ten years earlier. This one is signed and dated '93 in the lower left corner.
