"The Squat Pen" is a reference to a line in Heaney's poem "Digging" from his collection Death of a Naturalist. The line reads:
"Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun."
The Pen and ink artwork relies heavily on the contrast between light and dark to create depth and dimension. This can be seen as a visual representation of the poem’s exploration of contrasts: the past and present, tradition and change, physical labor and intellectual pursuit.
