About the Artist

Mildred Anne Butler was a trailblazing Irish artist whose works in watercolour and oil depict landscapes, domestic scenes, and animals with remarkable sensitivity. Born and raised in Kilmurry, Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Butler drew inspiration from her idyllic surroundings. Her passion for wildlife is particularly evident in her large-scale rook paintings, which showcase her keen observation and deep appreciation for the natural world.

Associated with the Newlyn School of painters, Butler was a pioneer of the en plein air style, emphasizing the immediacy and vibrancy of nature. Her talents earned her membership in prestigious institutions, including the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society, where she became a full member in 1937. Her works were cherished by prominent patrons, including Queen Mary of Teck and Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and her painting Morning Bath was acquired by the Chantrey Bequest and displayed in the Tate Gallery.

Despite arthritis ending her artistic career in the 1930s, Butler left behind a legacy of over 400 pieces, many of which continue to inspire and captivate. Her life and work are celebrated, including her recognition on an An Post postage stamp.
